WestJet, owned by Onex Corp, has issued a 72-hour lockout notification to the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), the union representing its maintenance engineers.
The company warned that a work stoppage could commence as early as Tuesday if an agreement is not reached with AMFA.
Ongoing Negotiations:
While WestJet and AMFA are engaged in talks, Bret Oestreich, the union president, acknowledged that both parties are still striving to reach a mutually acceptable agreement before the lockout deadline.
Canada’s Labor Minister, Seamus O’Regan, confirmed that the government had received WestJet’s lockout notice. O’Regan stated that federal mediators are actively facilitating discussions to facilitate a resolution at the bargaining table.
Mitigating Travel Disruptions:
Despite the looming threat of a work stoppage, WestJet reassured passengers that travel disruptions are not imminent.
The airline pledged to undertake necessary measures to manage any potential impacts, including operating a reduced schedule, accommodating changes and cancellations, and offering flexible options for affected customers.
