Japan’s Suzuki Motor announced on Wednesday that it plans to reduce the weight of its small Alto hatchback by 15% over the next decade.

The company aims to cut the vehicle’s energy usage and apply these technological advancements to other models. The Alto weighs 680 kg, and Suzuki hopes to lower that by 100 kg.

Benefits of Weight Reduction:

“If a vehicle is heavy, we also have to make the battery and motor larger to get a long range and good performance,” said Tatsuya Matsushita, an executive in charge of Suzuki’s automotive technology.

Speaking at an event on the automaker’s tech strategy, he added that smaller motors and batteries would likely allow Suzuki to lower the price of its models.

Technological Developments:

In addition to reducing vehicle weight, Suzuki is developing software and advanced driver-assist technologies.

The company hopes these innovations will help reduce traffic jams on congested roads, particularly in key markets like India.
