Apple has rejected Spotify’s latest version of its iOS app, which included in-app pricing information for users in the European Union.

This move comes as Spotify sought to comply with the European Commission’s ruling on music streaming, prompting a dispute between the two tech giants.

Spotify’s Submission and Rejection:

Spotify, a Swedish company, submitted a new version of its app to Apple containing basic pricing and website information, as required by the European Commission’s ruling.

However, Apple, based in Cupertino, California, rejected the update, citing reasons directly communicated to Spotify.

Apple Alleged Defiance and Spotify’s Response:

Spotify accused Apple of defying the European Commission’s decision and expressed frustration over the rejection.

The company claimed that Apple’s actions indicated a disregard for consumers, developers, and the law, emphasizing the need for compliance with regulatory mandates.

Background on European Commission’s Ruling:

In March, the European Commission fined Apple 1.84 billion euros for anti-competitive practices related to music streaming rivals, following a complaint from Spotify in 2019. This marked the first EU antitrust penalty against Apple.

Apple recently announced measures to allow music streaming apps in the European Economic Area to inform users of alternative payment options, as mandated by the European Union. However, Spotify’s submission did not include the proposed in-app link to external payment options.
