New year, new work wardrobe. With 2024 right arou New year, new work wardrobe.

With 2024 right around the corner, it might be time to spruce up your office uniform. And at work, quiet luxury can be a code that separates tiers of taste and success, stylists say.

Yes, it's expensive. It's all about looking nice at work in luxurious clothes from top-tier labels, while remaining unflashy about it. Which is why picking the right items is even more important. Tap the link 🔗in bio☝️.

KPMG partners in Dubai raised concerns about the c KPMG partners in Dubai raised concerns about the cost and transparency of a $1.5mn review by lawyers at Freshfields that followed allegations of misconduct.

The review was announced in July 2022 after the FT reported allegations of nepotism by KPMG's then-boss in the United Arab Emirates, Nader Haffar whose tenure had been extended by five years after a snap vote with no opponents. Freshfields also advised on a fresh leadership election as part of the mandate.

The revelations create further scrutiny of KPMG's global boss Bill Thomas, who was criticised by staff last year for failing to act more decisively on reports of poor governance in the Lower Gulf business.

As shadow minister for domestic abuse, she was responsible for an issue she has campaigned about for more than 20 years. She could have been on the brink of going into government and able to deliver change.

Then she quit to vote in the House of Commons against Sir Keir Starmer's stance on Gaza and in favour of a ceasefire. "It's been a tug of war emotionally," she admits. "It is sad but I don't think that it lessens my influence in this space of violence against women and girls. There is no way I'm going to stop. If anything, l'm able to do more of it."

Phillips, 42, has never been interested in status. The past few weeks may have been a political rollercoaster, but the MP for Birmingham Yardley has not lost her sense of humour or her deep throaty laugh.

"I first heard the name George Santos in 2019 when "I first heard the name George Santos in 2019 when my editor assigned me a routine writeup about a new congressional candidate," writes Mark Chiusano. "At the time, I was doing one and often more pieces a day for Newsday's newsletter about New York politics, and I was glad to have what seemed like a quick hit."

But the call was strange, Chiusano says. Santos seemed vague on some policies, but he spoke defiantly about his personal story-a first-generation American (Santos' phrase) and work in private equity for his whole career (which Chiusano eventually learned was wrong).

Eventually, though, Santos started hiding from Chiusano. By his second campaign in 2022, he skipped an endorsement interview, and once hustled away when he saw Chiusano in the men's room before a Newsday debate.

So began Chiusano's effort to get inside George Santos's head in what would eventually become his book, The Fabulist, which is out today.

"I found plenty of people who were happy to chat, including over 100 individuals who knew him, from friends and family to former teachers and dates. I spoke to people he scammed and people who just remembered him as a pretty fun guy. I learned about his jokes and his routines, and how expensive a wine bottle he'd order ($200, one person said). These helped fill out his profile even without a personal interview-and even if he had chatted, how would I have trusted him not to lie?"

At the link 🔗 in bio☝️, find out what Chiusano learned from investigating Santos-and how the chase continued even after his book was complete.

• Founded in Chicago more than a century ago as • Founded in Chicago more than a century ago as a fellowship of civic-minded professionals, Rotary has been fading in popularity for decades in the US. But in India people are clamoring to join: Membership in the country has more than doubled since 2005, to approximately 164,000. In the Us It's fallen 29% over the same period, to 272,000.

• Rotarians command a certain respect in India, says Pavithra Venkatagopalan, who runs a medical diagnostics company and is part of a club in Chennai that strives for diversity in its members' vocations.
Many of them run small to medium enterprises, offering them more flexibility to engage in Rotary activities.

• These characteristics hearken back to Rotary's US origins as a network of "almost aristocratic" social clubs, says Jeff Charles, an emeritus professor of history at California State University at San Marcos and author of Service Clubs in American Society: Rotary, Kiwanis, and Lions. Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer, created Rotary as a way to foster local connections, assembling a flock of Illinois businessmen in 1905. That model spread to other major cities, then to rural areas and later internationally, with meetings often held over lunch in hotels, churches and public buildings.
