Tesla is recalling 9,136 Model X sports utility vehicles due to safety concerns involving the roof trim. The trim may separate from the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) made the statement, marking a rare physical recall for the automaker.
Nature of the Issue:
The NHTSA’s report indicated that the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces might have been adhered to without primer. Consequently, one or both trim pieces could detach from the vehicle, posing a significant road hazard and elevating the risk of accidents.
In the first half of the year, Tesla recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles for various safety concerns, making it the second-highest recall figure in the U.S. behind Ford Motor, which recalled around 3.6 million vehicles. This context emphasizes the ongoing vigilance in vehicle safety measures across the automotive industry.
Remedial Actions by Tesla:
According to the NHTSA letter dated August 20, Tesla plans to test the adhesion of the roof trim and reattach the trim pieces as necessary at no cost to vehicle owners. These steps aim to alleviate safety risks associated with the affected vehicles.
This recall reflects Tesla’s commitment to consumer safety and regulatory compliance, even as the company typically resolves issues through over-the-air software updates. By addressing this physical recall, Tesla demonstrates its dedication to assuring the safety of both its drivers and other road users.
