Meta Platforms has canceled its plans for a premium mixed-reality headset that was set to compete with Apple’s Vision Pro, according to a report by The Information on Friday. Following a product review meeting, the company instructed employees at its Reality Labs division to halt the development of the device.

Details of the Axed Device:

The discontinued device, internally code-named La Jolla, was slated for release in 2027. It was designed to feature ultrahigh-resolution screens known as micro OLEDs, the same advanced display technology used in Apple’s Vision Pro.

Apple’s entry into the virtual and mixed-reality headset market gained significant attention last year. However, Apple’s Vision Pro has faced challenges in terms of sales, largely due to its steep price tag of $3,500.

Meta Reality Labs and Financial Performance:

Meta’s Reality Labs division, which develops and markets the Quest line of headsets, has faced substantial financial losses of billions of dollars. Despite these setbacks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains hopeful about the prospects of augmented and virtual reality technologies.

Meta’s existing line of Quest headsets includes the Quest 2, priced at $200, and the Quest 3, available for $500. The company had previously discontinued the Quest Pro, its most expensive headset at $999, in 2023 due to lackluster sales and unfavorable reviews.

Meta’s Response:

Meta has yet to respond to Reuters’ request for comment regarding the cancellation of the La Jolla project. The move reflects the competitive and challenging landscape in the mixed-reality market, where innovation and pricing play crucial roles in determining market success.
